Nabopolassar
Nabopolassar, a Chaldean tribal leader, exploited Assyrian weakness to establish Babylonian independence. His alliance with the Medes under Cyaxares resulted in the fall of Nineveh in 612 BCE, ending the Assyrian Empire. He left the consolidation of the new empire to his son Nebuchadnezzar II.
