Napoleon I
Napoleon Bonaparte rose from Corsican obscurity to become Emperor of the French, conquering most of continental Europe and reshaping it through the Napoleonic Code. His military genius produced stunning victories at Austerlitz, Jena, and Wagram, but his invasion of Russia in 1812 and the Wars of Liberation broke his empire. Exiled to Elba then to Saint Helena after Waterloo in 1815, he died a prisoner but a legend that would inspire French politics for generations.
