Nathanael Greene
A self-taught Quaker from Rhode Island who became Washington's most trusted general, Nathanael Greene commanded the Southern Department from 1780 onward and effectively liberated the Carolinas through strategic genius rather than battlefield victories. His unorthodox strategy of strategic retreat, division of forces, and attrition denied Cornwallis a decisive engagement and drove him northward to his fate at Yorktown.
