American agronomist who developed high-yield, disease-resistant semi-dwarf wheat varieties in Mexico during the 1950s and 60s. His varieties, combined with irrigation and fertilisers, multiplied wheat yields in Mexico, India, and Pakistan by 3–6× within a decade — the Green Revolution. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization credited him with saving a billion lives from famine. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, making him one of only seven people to win the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal.
