Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell led the Parliamentarian forces that defeated Charles I, authorised the king's execution, and ruled England as Lord Protector from 1653 to 1658. His Western Design (1655) resulted in the capture of Jamaica. He re-admitted Jews to England (1656) and promoted Protestant mercantile interests that drove colonial expansion.
