Olympe de Gouges
Marie Gouze, known by her pen name Olympe de Gouges, was a self-educated playwright and political pamphleteer who in 1791 published the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen, demanding that women be granted the same civic and legal status as men. She opposed the execution of Louis XVI on humanitarian grounds, and her attacks on Robespierre and the Terror made her an enemy of the Montagnards. She was guillotined in November 1793, with the Public Prosecutor declaring that she had 'forgotten the virtues suited to her sex'.
