Otto III

Otto III was one of the most intellectually remarkable rulers of the early medieval period, ascending to the throne as an infant of three upon his father Otto II's death in 983. His grand ambition was the Renovatio Imperii Romanorum - the Renewal of the Roman Empire - in which Rome would again become the capital of a universal Christian empire. He elevated his mentor Gerbert of Aurillac to the papacy as Sylvester II in 999, a symbolic pairing meant to evoke the first Constantine and the first Sylvester. He died in 1002 at the age of 21 near Viterbo, his grand vision unrealized, leaving no heirs.
