Patrice Lumumba
First Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (1960). His combative independence-day speech and appeals for Soviet help alarmed Western powers; he was deposed and assassinated in 1961 with Belgian and US complicity, becoming a martyr of African independence.
