Paul Lauterbur

Paul Lauterbur of the University of Illinois developed the technique of using magnetic field gradients to create two-dimensional MRI images, publishing his breakthrough in Nature in 1973. He shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Peter Mansfield.
