Pausanias of Sparta

Pausanias led the combined Greek forces — 100,000 men according to Herodotus — against the Persian general Mardonius at Plataea. The Greek victory ended Persian ambitions in Europe. Pausanias later acquired a reputation for arrogance and possible medising (collaborating with Persia), was recalled, and eventually starved to death walled into a Spartan temple.
