Perdiccas
Perdiccas was one of Alexander the Great's most trusted senior commanders, serving as chiliarch (second-in-command) in the final years of the campaign. When Alexander died in 323 BCE without a clear successor, Perdiccas held the royal signet ring and became regent for Philip III Arrhidaeus and the unborn Alexander IV. He attempted to maintain the unity of Alexander's empire against the centrifugal ambitions of the other diadochi. His arrogance and his plan to marry Alexander's sister Cleopatra alienated his rivals. He was assassinated by his own officers — including Seleucus — during a failed crossing of the Nile while campaigning against Ptolemy in 321 BCE.
