Pericles
Pericles was the dominant Athenian statesman during the city's Golden Age in the 5th century BC, turning Athens into the cultural and political center of the Greek world. He oversaw the construction of the Parthenon and other monuments on the Acropolis while expanding democratic institutions and Athenian naval power. His leadership during the early years of the Peloponnesian War defined Athenian strategy, though he died of plague in 429 BC.
