Pertinax

Pertinax rose from the son of a freedman to become one of Rome's most distinguished generals and senators under Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. After the assassination of Commodus in December 192 CE, the Praetorian Guard and Senate proclaimed him emperor. He immediately attempted to restore fiscal discipline and senatorial dignity after Commodus's chaotic reign, but his reforms threatened the Praetorian Guard's lavish privileges. After only 87 days in power, a group of Praetorians stormed the palace on March 28, 193 CE, and killed him. His murder triggered the notorious auction of the empire, in which Didius Julianus purchased the throne from the Guard.
