Pescennius Niger

Gaius Pescennius Niger was an experienced Roman general who served as governor of Syria when news of Pertinax's murder reached him in 193 CE. His troops and the eastern provinces proclaimed him emperor, and he had the initial support of much of the eastern empire. However, Septimius Severus, who had been proclaimed by the Danubian legions, secured Rome first and then turned east against Niger. After defeats at Cyzicus, Nicaea, and decisively at the Battle of Issus in 194 CE, Niger fled toward Parthia but was captured and beheaded. Severus had his supporters proscribed and punished the cities that had backed him.
