Philip II of Macedon
Philip II was King of Macedon who transformed his kingdom from a minor state into the dominant power of the Greek world through military innovation and diplomatic cunning. He developed the Macedonian phalanx with the sarissa pike and forged the army that his son Alexander would use to conquer the known world. His assassination in 336 BC left a united Greece and a formidable military machine to his son Alexander the Great.
