Philip IV of Spain
Philip IV ruled Spain during the reverses of the Thirty Years' War and the loss of Portugal (1640). He was also a notable patron of the arts—Velázquez was his court painter. His reign represents both the cultural peak of the Golden Age and the beginning of Spain's imperial decline.
