Pliny the Elder
Gaius Plinius Secundus (23-79 CE), known as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman admiral, administrator, and encyclopedist. His Natural History — 37 books covering cosmology, geography, zoology, botany, minerals, and art — is the largest surviving work from antiquity and the foundational text of Western natural science. He died on the beach at Stabiae attempting to rescue survivors of the eruption of Vesuvius.
