Pliny the Younger

Gaius Caecilius Secundus Plinius (61-c. 113 CE), known as Pliny the Younger, was a Roman senator, lawyer, and author. His collection of 247 letters — carefully revised for publication — is the most vivid source for upper-class Roman life under the Flavians and Trajan. His two letters to Tacitus describing the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE are the founding documents of scientific volcanology.
