Pompey the Great
Pompey's campaigns in Spain, against the pirates (67 BCE), and in the East (Pontus, Syria, Jerusalem) made him the most powerful man in Rome before Caesar's rise. The Triumvirate with Caesar and Crassus eventually collapsed into civil war. Defeated at Pharsalus (48 BCE), he fled to Egypt where he was murdered.
