Pope Paul VI

Giovanni Battista Montini succeeded John XXIII in 1963 and continued the Second Vatican Council. His pontificate was defined by the attempt to update Catholic teaching (aggiornamento) while maintaining doctrinal continuity. In Cold War policy, he developed Vatican Ostpolitik — cautious diplomatic engagement with communist governments, coordinated by Cardinal Agostino Casaroli — aimed at securing limited Church freedoms in the Eastern bloc through negotiation rather than confrontation. He was the first pope in centuries to travel internationally, visiting the UN, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
