Pietro Francesco Orsini, pope 1724–1730. An austere Dominican friar elevated unexpectedly to the papacy. Devout and personally humble, he was politically naive and allowed his chief minister Niccolò Coscia to corrupt the papal administration. He canonised Louis Bertrand and John of the Cross.
