Prospero Lambertini, pope 1740–1758. One of the most learned and pragmatic popes of the 18th century. A canon lawyer, he reformed Church discipline, improved relations with European monarchies, and corresponded respectfully with Enlightenment thinkers including Voltaire, who dedicated a play to him.
