Annibale della Genga, pope 1823–1829. A conservative reactionary who reversed the moderate reforms of his predecessors, reimposed the ghetto for Roman Jews, and banned vaccination. He worked to reassert papal authority across the Papal States and strengthen the Congregation of the Index.
