Giovanni Angelo Braschi, pope 1775–1799. His pontificate was catastrophic for the papacy. He condemned the French Revolution and Civil Constitution of the Clergy, was humiliated by Napoleon, and died a prisoner in Valence, France. Despite these disasters he was a great patron of the arts, completing the Pio-Clementine Museum in the Vatican.
