Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, pope 1903–1914. A pastor of humble origins, he lowered the age of first communion, reformed the liturgy and Church music, reorganized canon law, and condemned "Modernism" in the encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis (1907). Canonised in 1954 — one of only two popes of the modern era to be canonised (the other being John Paul II).
