Prince Wenzel von Kaunitz
Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz-Rietberg was the Austrian State Chancellor and the principal architect of the Diplomatic Revolution of 1756, engineering the alliance between Austria and France that reversed two centuries of enmity. Appointed by Maria Theresa, he served as foreign minister for decades and was one of the most skilled diplomats of the eighteenth century. He believed that recovering Silesia from Prussia required isolating Frederick the Great by reversing the existing alliance system.
