Publius Decius Mus

Roman consul who performed the devotio at the Battle of Vesuvius (340 BCE) during the Latin War — formally dedicating himself and the enemy to the gods of the underworld, then charging alone into the Latin army. He died, but Rome won the battle. His son and possibly his grandson repeated the ritual at Sentinum (295 BCE) and Asculum, making the Decii a dynasty of sacred sacrifice.
