Publius Licinius Crassus

Publius Licinius Crassus was one of Julius Caesar's most effective subordinates during the Gallic Wars, commanding the cavalry on the Rhine campaigns and leading an independent expedition into Aquitania in 56 BCE with great success. He accompanied his father Marcus Crassus on the invasion of Parthia in 54 BCE. At the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BCE the Roman army was surrounded and decimated by Parthian horse archers and cataphracts. Publius led a cavalry charge to try to relieve the pressure on the infantry but was himself surrounded and killed; according to the sources, he forced a companion to kill him rather than be taken captive.
