Publius Quinctilius Varus
Roman governor of Germany who led three legions into the Teutoburg Forest ambush arranged by Arminius in 9 CE. He had governed Syria effectively but underestimated Germany. When his column was being destroyed, he fell on his sword. Augustus reportedly cried 'Varus, give me back my legions!' His head was sent to Rome.
