Pyrrhus of Epirus
King of Epirus and one of the greatest generals of antiquity, considered by Hannibal second only to Alexander. He invaded Italy at Tarentum's invitation (280 BCE), defeated Rome twice but with catastrophic losses — coining the phrase 'Pyrrhic victory.' He refused to make peace after Rome rejected his terms, fought inconclusively in Sicily, and was defeated at Beneventum (275). His Italian campaign introduced Rome to Hellenistic military power.
