Queen Victoria

Britain's longest-reigning monarch before Elizabeth II, whose 63-year reign gave its name to an era of industrialisation, imperial expansion, and profound social change. The British Empire grew to cover a quarter of the world's land surface during her reign, and she became Empress of India in 1876. Devoted to her husband Prince Albert, she withdrew from public life after his death in 1861 but remained a powerful symbol of empire.
