Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius

Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius was a prominent Roman general of the Sullan faction. The son of Metellus Numidicus, he earned the cognomen Pius for his efforts to recall his exiled father. He fought loyally for Sulla during the civil war against the Marians and was rewarded with the consulship in 80 BCE. He then spent nearly a decade campaigning in Spain (79–72 BCE) against the renegade Marian general Quintus Sertorius, a brilliant guerrilla commander who had created a rival Roman state in Hispania. Metellus struggled against Sertorius and eventually required Pompey's assistance. He served as Pontifex Maximus from around 81 BCE until his death.
