Quintus Caecilius Metellus Scipio
Quintus Caecilius Metellus Scipio was a senior senator who became Pompey's colleague as consul in 52 BCE and his father-in-law, cementing Pompey's alliance with the Optimate faction. After Pompey's defeat at Pharsalus in 48 BCE and subsequent assassination, Metellus Scipio took command of the remaining Pompeian and Optimate forces in Africa, joining with Juba I of Numidia. Caesar defeated the combined forces decisively at the Battle of Thapsus in 46 BCE. Fleeing by sea, Metellus Scipio was intercepted and killed himself rather than surrender, reportedly dying with the quip that the commander was doing well.
