Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus
Roman statesman and dictator, architect of the Fabian strategy against Hannibal. Appointed dictator after Lake Trasimene (217 BCE), he refused pitched battle with Hannibal and instead harassed supply lines and cut off foragers. Nicknamed 'Cunctator' (the Delayer) as a term of abuse, he was later rehabilitated as the war's strategic saviour. He consistently opposed Scipio Africanus's bold Africa plan.
