The third pillar of the High Renaissance alongside Leonardo and Michelangelo. His Vatican frescoes — above all The School of Athens — became the canonical image of classical learning reunited with Christian Rome. He died on his 37th birthday, having compressed a career of extraordinary productivity into barely two decades in Rome.
