Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
The master of light and shadow in the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt's ability to illuminate the human soul through paint — particularly in his self-portraits, which chart his life from prosperous Amsterdam burgher to bankrupt old man — has never been surpassed. The Night Watch (1642) is the most famous Dutch painting ever made. He died penniless and was buried in an unmarked grave.
