Richard I (the Lionheart)
Renowned warrior-king who spent most of his reign on crusade, leading the Third Crusade and negotiating a truce with Saladin that secured Christian access to Jerusalem. He spent little time in England, regarding it primarily as a source of revenue for military campaigns. He was mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt while besieging a minor castle in France and died without a legitimate heir.
