Richard II

Grandson of Edward III who showed personal bravery facing the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 but later developed an autocratic style of rule that alienated the nobility. Deposed by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV) in 1399, he died in captivity at Pontefract Castle, probably of starvation. His reign saw important literary developments, including the works of Geoffrey Chaucer.
