Robert E. Lee
Commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia (1862–1865), widely regarded as the most gifted tactical commander of the Civil War; won victories at Second Bull Run and Chancellorsville before his invasion of the North was repulsed at Gettysburg in July 1863; surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.
