Roh Tae-woo
Roh Tae-woo (1932-2021) was a former general who became South Korea's first democratically elected president in 1987, winning a three-way split in the first direct presidential election since 1971. His Nordpolitik policy normalised relations with the Soviet Union and China and eased tensions on the peninsula. Seoul's hosting of the 1988 Summer Olympics marked South Korea's emergence as a developed nation. He was later convicted and imprisoned for his role in the 1979 coup that brought Chun Doo-hwan to power.
