A French army officer and amateur composer, Rouget de Lisle wrote La Marseillaise overnight in 1792 in Strasbourg at the request of the mayor. He composed both words and music for what would become the French national anthem and one of the most recognised songs in the world. He was himself a constitutional royalist who nearly went to the guillotine during the Terror.
