Iranian Shia grand ayatollah who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, founded the Islamic Republic of Iran based on the principle of velayat-e faqih (guardianship of the jurist), directed Iran's conduct of the eight-year Iran–Iraq War, and served as Supreme Leader until his death on 3 June 1989.
