Rupert of the Palatinate
Rupert of the Palatinate was elected King of Germany in 1400 by the four Rhenish electors who had just deposed Wenceslaus. His most ambitious undertaking was a military expedition to Italy in 1401-1402, intended to secure his coronation as emperor from Pope Boniface IX, but the campaign was a costly failure as he was unable to cross the Alps effectively in the face of Milanese opposition. Rupert lacked the financial resources and political base to impose meaningful royal authority on the German territories. He died in 1410 without having resolved the fundamental problems of imperial governance.
