Samora Machel
Samora Machel (1933-1986) led FRELIMO's armed liberation struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and became Mozambique's first President at independence in 1975. He built a Marxist-Leninist state, supported liberation movements in Zimbabwe and South Africa despite South African destabilisation campaigns, and signed the Nkomati Accord with apartheid South Africa in 1984. He died in a plane crash near the South African border in 1986 in circumstances widely suspected to involve South African sabotage.
