Sandro Botticelli
Painter of the Medici golden age. His Birth of Venus and Primavera are the quintessential images of the Florentine Renaissance — mythological, sensuous, and charged with Neoplatonic allegory. A follower of Savonarola in his later years, he reportedly burned some of his own secular works in the Bonfire of the Vanities (1497).
