Septimius Severus
Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna (modern Libya) — the first African-born emperor. He won the civil war of 193–197 CE against rival claimants, campaigned in Parthia and Britain, and on his deathbed advised his sons to 'enrich the soldiers; despise all others.' His dynasty's dependence on military support accelerated the Crisis of the Third Century.
