Sergei Korolev
Sergei Korolev was the chief rocket engineer of the Soviet space programme, responsible for Sputnik 1 (1957), Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 flight (1961), and the early Soyuz spacecraft. Known only as the 'Chief Designer' during his lifetime for secrecy reasons, he is widely regarded as the father of the Soviet space programme.
