Sextus Julius Severus

Sextus Julius Severus was one of Rome's most capable generals of the Hadrianic period, serving as governor of Britain before Hadrian summoned him to Judaea to suppress the Bar Kokhba revolt (132–135 CE). Employing a strategy of systematic devastation rather than pitched battle, he gradually reduced the rebel strongholds and effectively ended organized Jewish resistance in Judaea. The province was subsequently renamed Syria Palaestina.
