Sigmund Freud

Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis, whose theories of the unconscious mind, repression, and the interpretation of dreams reshaped 20th-century thought across psychology, medicine, literature, and culture. The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) and Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905) were among his most influential works. Though many of his specific theories have been revised or rejected, Freud's concept of the unconscious permanently altered how humans understand themselves.
