Sir William Temple
English diplomat and essayist who negotiated the Triple Alliance (1668) against Louis XIV and the marriage of William of Orange to Mary. His Observations upon the United Provinces (1673) was one of the most influential descriptions of Dutch republican government and mercantile supremacy, directly shaping English understanding of the Dutch commercial challenge.
